ADP Employment: Sharp Increase

February 1, 2017
Bottom Line: ADP reported a sharp increase in hiring in January with payrolls rising 246k, the most since June. ADP data do not account for government workers which are included in the Employment Situation headline number. This report would suggest moderate upside risk to the 175k consensus for non-farm payroll growth to be reported Friday. According to ADP's data there were strong gains in both goods producing and service producing industries with 25k new construction jobs and 71k new professional/business service jobs versus 4k and 22k, respectively, in December.
